Foot orthotics are designed to provide support, improve comfort, and address specific foot issues. If you own orthotics, you might wonder if you can use them in more than one pair of shoes. The good news is that in most cases, you can. This post explains when and how you can use your foot orthotics across different shoes without sacrificing comfort or support.
How Orthotics Fit Into Different Shoes
Orthotics come in various shapes and sizes depending on your foot profile and what your goals are with the orthotic device, and are usually trimmed to fit perfectly in one pair of shoes. Most of us however wear more than one pair - so having the option to transfer them is very important to a lot of people.
Shoe size matters:
If your shoe is smaller than your orthotic, it won’t fit properly and could cause:
Lumps and bumps in the toe area
Changes in how the orthotic sits in the shoe, giving you to much or not enough support
Fit issues, where the orthotic literally doesn’t fit inside the shoe
Shoe style matters:
Orthotics Designed For Athletic Shoes:
These often fit well in casual sneakers, walking shoes, and other runners.
May not fit well into dress shoes or boots with narrower profiles
Orthotics Designed For Dress Shoes:
Will likely fit into any shoe
May not be comfortable in larger/ wider shoes
You might feel the edges of the orthotic in the toe box
You may not get as much support or cushion if they are transferred to a active shoe
Signs Your Orthotics Fit Well in Multiple Shoes
When using orthotics in more than one pair of shoes, its important to use your main shoe as a baseline. This allows you to have a side by side comparison to the fit and feel between shoes, as comfort is the best indicator of a good fit. You can also look for these signs:
Your foot feels supported without pressure points.
There is no slipping or sliding inside the shoe.
You don’t experience pain or discomfort after walking or standing.
The shoe fits comfortably without extra pressure when done up.
If your orthotics feel comfortable and have similar support in all your shoes, it’s safe to use them interchangeably!
Tips for Using Orthotics in Multiple Shoes
To get the most out of your orthotics across different shoes, keep these tips in mind:
Check shoe size and shape before inserting orthotics.
This can pinpoint if the orthotic is longer or wider than the stock insole.
Remove existing insoles if they take up too much space.
This helps with space, and helps the orthotic sit flat inside the shoe!
Test walk in each shoe to ensure comfort.
Comfort is our gauge - If it doesn’t feel good, its probably not a good fit.
Get them adjusted if your new favourite shoe does not feel good with the orthotic.
A lot of clinics will allow for fit adjustment - be prepared as there may be additional charges for adjustment made past the “warranty period”.
Orthotics May Not Work in Certain Shoes
Some shoes simply aren’t suitable for orthotics. These include:
Basic sandals and slides with nothing to keep the orthotic in place.
Very high heels with limited space - not impossible but harder to fit.
Shoes or sandals with built in arch support that does not come out.
Pros and Cons of Using Orthotics in Multiple Shoes
Using your orthotics in more than one pair of shoes can:
Save money by avoiding multiple custom orthotics
especially if your using them as treatment
Provide consistent support and alignment throughout your day - work, play, home
May lead to early wear of the orthotic
Daily transfers can be harder on the orthotic than if it stayed in the same shoe
Final Thoughts on Using Orthotics in Multiple Shoes
As a general rule - YES - you can of course transfer your orthotics from one shoe to the next, but make sure you are able pinpoint the difference between a good fit and a poor one.
If you have been hesitant to get orthotics because you thought you needed 20 pairs of orthotics for your 20 pairs of shoes - you can rest easy knowing that 1 pair of orthotics should fit most of the shoes in your collection.
